The tumor microenvironment is a fertile bed for cancer cells to metabolize, grow and replicate. Hypoxia is one of the major contributors to the molecular and cellular heterogeneity displayed by these cells. Chemo/radio-resistance and altered prognosis are key features of many such solid tumors. Hypoxia has been shown to modulate the metastatic potential, proliferation and response to therapy in cancer cells. Understanding the genetic and epigenetic basis of cancer cells in the hypoxic tumor microenvironment will facilitate efforts to discover new molecular targets for therapy.

Additionally, the tumor microenvironment plays an important role in regulating the epigenome of a cancer cell. Our lab has elucidated the epigenetic mechanism responsible for formation of cancer stem cells in gliomas. We have also tinkered with predisposing risk SNPs of lung cancer. An ongoing effort in the lab is to assess small molecules, nanoparticles and natural products for therapy. Besides, genes and proteins implicated in hypoxia induced chemoresistance and worsening of cancer prognosis are being studied.
